Lenses can be made of many different materials, including plastic, glass, and quartz. Eyewear frames can be made of plastic, metal, and even wood or silver!
Plastic Lenses
CR-39 is a plastic polymer used to make standard lenses. Polycarbonates are synthetic plastics that are transparent, impact-resistant, and can be easily shaped. They are perfect for optical lenses because they offer 100% UV protection. Another synthetic option for eyeglasses lenses is Trivex, which is a pre-polymer plastic based on urethane. High-index plastics are a type of plastic that has a high refractive index. This makes them thinner, but also heavier than other types of plastic.
Glass Lenses
Glass lenses are still used today, despite the popularity of plastic lenses, because they have a better index range than plastic and can be thin and less distortive. Glass lenses are heavier and more scratch-resistant than plastic lenses, but are also more delicate and expensive to produce.
Plastic frames
Zyl is a light and versatile material used to make plastic frames for eyeglasses. It is made from cellulose acetate that is lightweight and able to be coloured in thousands of different ways. Another common frame material is cellulose acetate propionate, which is a nylon-based plastic that is transparent, glossy, and hypoallergenic. Nylon frames are strong and light, making them ideal for sports frames and wraparounds.
Metal frames
There are many types of metal glasses frames, the most common being monel. Titanium is another metal that is popular for glasses frames because it is durable, rustproof, and hypoallergenic. Titanium is also incredibly lightweight.
